This barred spiral galaxy presents itself to us nearly edge-on. It is very large (13 arc minutes) and quite bright. The large dust lane that bisects the galaxy is composed of dust and gas. It blocks the light from the billions of stars that populate this region. Look at the image and imagine the dust rings surrounding the core of the galaxy much as Saturn's rings circle the planet. Yes... you can see it can't you?
