The Horsehead and Flame Nebulae
B33 and NGC2024

The horsehead nebula (right of center) is a test of  observing skills for even the most seasoned observer. It is a dark nebula set against a very faint emission nebula (the red part). The Flame Nebula (just below the brightest star, Zeta Orinus) is much easier to see. Sometimes called "Tank Tracks", it fills the field of view at low power in most telescopes.

The shot of B33 (left), the Horsehead Nebula, is a composite of 3 20 minute exposures through red, green, and blue filters.  An ST7 camera was used with a C11 and F6.3 focal reducer.
Here we see an enhanced shot of the heart of the flame nebula. Ionized emission gasses in this
These nebulae are estimated to be 1500 light years distant.
